Shanxi province, China's leading coal producer, is hoping to turn itself into China's largest clean energy base in years. The province plans to upgrade coke furnaces which lack recovery facilities in the Fenhe River Valleys, and concentrate hundreds of smaller ovens in the same valley into several groups where large modern coke ovens will be installed during the Ninth-Five Year Plan period (1996-2000).
