BHILAI: Steel city Bhilai has already discarded the plastic ban imposed on January 1. People have been seen using plastic carry bags while corporation is still trying hard to enforce the ban.
Be it confectionery shops, bookstores, grocers or the weekly haat bazaar, the use of plastic carry bag continues unabated. At some of the busiest market places in city like Sector-6, Supela, Jawahar Market and especially the weekly haat bazaar, many shops and vendors have no idea of plastic ban. At least they pretend they don't. "People making purchases worth Rs 100 are not willing to pay Rs 5 or 10 extra for a bag," said a fish-seller at the weekly haat bazaar.
A social worker, Pradeep Bakliwal admitted that ban on plastic carry bags was not effective in city. Lack of cooperation from general public and traders has come as a road block for the corporation. He said the campaign should focus on reducing indiscriminate use of plastic bags and promote alternatives such as cloth and paper bags.
"Plastic bags are back in business. We cannot afford other alternatives as customers demand plastic ones and they are not ready to pay for other bags," said a general store owner in Sector-2.
Finding loopholes in the provisions of ban, some shopkeepers have also started selling items in plastic bags without any handle, as the ban does not include use of plastic in packaging.
Bhilai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) public relation officer Ashok Pahadia said that the ban has been misinterpreted. "It does not cover packaged milk, bread and other such items," he said and added that BMC will be more stringent and action will be taken against violators.
