Cold wave back in Indore

City residents not used to prolonged winter spell are experiencing a harrowing time this year as the mercury dropped by 50% in the last 72 hours to 6.5 degree Celsius on Thursday. Disturbances and snow fall in the northern parts of the country led to chilly winds blowing through the city from late Wednesday night and major part of the day. The Met department has forecast that cold wave conditions in the city would continue for the next few days. Meanwhile, severe cold wave conditions prevailed at isolated places over north Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha regions. In the state capital mercury dropped to 7.1 degree Celsius. The forecast by the Met department states that there is a possibility of mild showers in parts of the state. Among the cities in the state, Gwalior recorded a minimum temperature of 4 degree Celsius while Jabalpur registered a minimum of 9 degree Celsius. Times News Network Indore: Winter seems to be playing truant in the city this year. After a few days of respite the cold wave has come back. The mercury, after soaring to 13.4 degrees Celsius a couple of days dipped again to 6.5 degree Celcius on Thursday. The Met department said that this unexpected change in the climate was due to the snowfall in the North India and the beginning of northern winds have led to the change in weather. The chilly climate is likely to continue for the next few days. On Thursday, Indore recorded a minimum of 6.5 degree Celcius and this was the lowest in the month of February in the past four years. The temperature has come down by 6 degree celcius in the past four days, the Met department officials said adding that the choppy cold waves would continue to sweep the city for the next few days. The lowest temperature of February was recorded at 2.8 degree Celcius in 1929, while in 2004 the mercury dipped to 3 degree Celcius, while the highest maximum temperature recorded in February was at 37.9 degree celcius in 2006. "Sudden drop in the temperature was mainly due to continuous snowfall in North India and the beginning of northern winds," said the Met department official adding that winter would prolong by at least three to four weeks this season. For the past few years, winter receded from February first week. However, the current trend seemed to have pushed this winter further and it is expected to go up to March first week. The Met official said that weather witnessed a significant change in trend as overall temperature of winter slid this season on contrary to the previous seasons.
