Comprehensive energy policy needs broad approach

Starry-eyed might be the best term for the tone of the long-range energy outlook on supply anddemand presented by the Advisory Committee for Energy, which reports to the Minister ofInternational Trade and Industry. The report outlines anticipated energy needs between now and 2010. It is a foundation for many other government policies, including the steps to be taken to counter global warming.A starry-eyed approach to such policies is unacceptable. In planning future energy needs, ways must be found to avoid adding to the global environmental burden without being overly dependent upon nuclear power generation. (editorial)
