KOKRAJHAR, Dec 7: The people of flood and erosion-prone Dhemaji district under the banner of the Ganatantric Nagarik Suraksha Mancha (GNSM) raised their demand for permanent flood and erosion control structures in the district. The Mancha has taken the twin problem of flood and erosion in the district as a serious issue, and is prepared to fight till government solves the problem. In an interaction with newsmen at Kokrajhar today, GNSM president Jarimin Narzary said that the Mancha had already submitted an 11-point Charter of Demands to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi through the Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner recently for taking steps to tackle the flood and erosion in the district. Copies of the memorandum was also submitted to BTC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Hagrama Mohilary, DoNER Minister Bijay Krishna Handique, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, State Water Resources Minister Prithibi Majhi, State Transport Minister Chandan Brahma and local MLA Bhuban Pegu. Narzary said that most of the people in Dhemaji, especially those living near rivers, have been under a constant fear-psychosis as no protection measures had been taken up by the successive governments in Assam. According to him, a number of villages falling under 15 gaon panchayats in Dhemaji and Jonai subdivisions have been badly affected by erosion and floods.
