Consumer has to pay Rs 3.75 extra for a litre of diesel

The Indian consumer is yet to gain the benefit of the Union Cabinet's decision in September 1997 to bring diesel prices on import parity. While the cost of imported diesel, including freight charges, import duty, port charges and sales tax, comes to about Rs 6.25 a litre, the consumer has to buy diesel at about Rs. 10 a litre, oil industry sources said.
