Nearly a year after the Assistant drug Controller of India cautioned hospitals about possible contamination of intravenous fluids, a city hospital has reported visible contamination of the IV fluid of a leading company. This is not the first instance of pollution of life-saving IV fluids and injection water coming into public notice. In 1997, following complaints of "chills and fever" on administration of IV fluids and injections to patients at some hospitals in Chennai, the Assistant Drugs Controller of India (ADCI) had advised hospitals all over the country to test samples of dextrose IV fluids for the presence of "pathogenic micro-organisms" before using them.
