The Delhi Government on Wednesday sought more time from the Delhi High Court to respond to a plea seeking contempt action against it for not implementing the mixed use of traffic on the BRT corridor despite HC order. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw granted time to the Government and posted the matter for August 13. The court had on August 1 issued show-cause notices to DIMTS, Delhi Government and its transport department for not allowing other vehicles to use the reserved bus lane on the BRT corridor. The plea filed by the NGO NyayaBhoomi sought contempt action against the Chief Secretary PK Tripathi and Transport Commissioner Chandra Mohan. President of Nyaya Bhoomi BB Sharan pressed for immediate action against the Government saying commuters suffer daily on account of non-implementation of the mixed use of traffic but the court adjourned the matter when the Government pleaded for some more time. The court had on July 5 directed the transport department to retain till its final order an arrangement that allowed plying of all vehicles in the reserved bus lane. The court had earlier directed the Government to continue with the arrangement made by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) during a trial run on the corridor between May 12 and May 23 till the Court’s final order. The CRRI model allowed all vehicles to use the reserved lane for buses.
