The new BRT corridors would provide for at-grade crossing for pedestrians instead of constructing more foot overbridges. The corridors would also have multi-utility zones with space for hawkers and on-street parking. “Multi-utility zones would be provided for along the six BRT corridors, which would be used by hawkers. These zones would also function as service lanes and space for on-street parking. These facilities were not provided for in the earlier BRT corridors. By giving a dedicated space to hawkers, we are ensuring that they do not encroach on the cycle tracks or footpaths,’’ said the DIMTS spokesperson. “The proposed BRT corridors would be of a hybrid nature which means that it would not be a closed corridor at any point but would be flexible. The bus stops would be staggered and would not be located in the middle of the bus lane. Staggered stations are a pair of stations where each is dedicated to one direction of bus movement and are staggered on both sides of an intersection or a pedestrian crossing. The stations will be made next to the intersections for the convenience of passengers. At-grade crossing will be provided for pedestrians with foot overbridges (FOBs) only being constructed where it is absolutely required. All the UTTIPEC street guidelines will be adhered to,’’said the spokesperson. In some cases, the FOBs may also have to be dismantled. With hardly anyone using these FOBs, they are just encroaching on right of way, claimed sources. Urban rejuvenation of nullahs would also be taken up as part of this project. “The existing nullahs along the corridor can be made more attractive through landscaping. The proposed design includes rejuvenation of the nullahs forming a green belt providing informal urban spaces for people of nearby residential areas,’’ said a DIMTS official. “Our proposals have also taken into consideration Metro Phase-III that would soon be coming up in the city,’’ the official said, adding that provisions would be made for cycle stands, parking of auto- and cycle rickshaws and integration between ITC corridors and Metro stations. Meanwhile, progress on three out of the seven PWD corridors has now hit a roadblock. “We are in the process of hiring consultants for our BRT corridors. They should be appointed by the end of the year and they will prepare detailed project reports for these corridors. But three of the corridors —ISBT Kashmere Gate to Tikri Border, National Stadium to Ghazipur and ISBT Anand Vihar to Connaught Place —are overlapping with the east-west corridor and we have to take a decision on what has to be done in this matter,’’ said a PWD official. The total length of the corridors under PWD is 105km. The longest corridor to be taken up by the civic body is the one from Mukundpur to Palam More which is 29km long.
