Sindoor contains harmful lead oxide and bindis contain mercury sulphide - both of which are highly toxic compounds, Mumbai based Consumer Guidance Society of India said in a report. These two compounds have been listed as "poisonous substances" in Schedule E(1) of the Drug and Cosmetic Rules under the traditional system of medicine, Consumer Guidance Society of India says in its newsletter Keemat.
