A Bristol University study has shown that materials in the shells of anthropods- the group of animals including crustaceans, arachnids and insects-change over time into substances similar to those found in oil source rocks. The Bristol work was done as part of a five year Natural Environment Research Council programme to study how biological molecules in archeological and fossil materials change over time.
