A proposed dam near the Malaysian capital that would threaten the area's environment has drawn surpringly vociferous protest from a wide range of citizens. This display of opposition to the proposed $526 million dam marks a dramatic shift from a decade or two ago when the country's famously subdued citizens rarely uttered a word against the Malaysian government's infrastructure projects. The proposed dam will indundate 600 hectares of primary forest, two villages of Orang Asil, thought to be original inhabitants of Malaysia and a raft of fish pond, orchards and scenic river spots.
