Antibiotics are readily available without a prescription from pharmacies and corner shops around Asia. Asia is quickly becoming a breeding ground for multi-drug resistant bacteria-capable of evading even the most sophisticated antibiotics. People will suffer because of it. A 1995 survey by the Health Systems Research Institute found hospitals prescribed antibiotics to some 70% of patients, regardless of their diagnosis.
