The Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) will use geographical information system (GIS) to create a comprehensive database on the status of traditional water bodies in the peri-urban area of Chennai. S. Janakarajan, MIDS Professor, said that there were about 3,000 tanks with a command area of 2.86 lakh acres in Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts.
