Having made no headway in resolving the longstanding Munak Canal imbroglio, the Delhi Government has written to the Cabinet Secretariat to call for a meeting by the Group of Ministers headed by Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to put an end to the dispute. Delhi and Haryana have been sparring over release of additional water for Delhi through the Munak Canal. Delhi claims that as per the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two States, Delhi stands to get an additional 80 MGD of water over and above the quantum that it receives. Haryana on the other hand has been contesting this claim and maintains that 80 MGD is part of the quantum that Delhi receives. With both sides refusing to climb down from their respective stands, the Union Government had formed a GoM to resolve the issue. “The GoM met twice to discuss the issue and both sides were asked to amicably resolve the matter, but with no end in sight, the Delhi Jal Board has written to the Delhi Government to seek the Centre’s intervention again. So a letter has been sent to the Cabinet Secretariat, requesting the GoM to meet and take up the issue again,” said an official. Delhi is keen to secure the release of the additional 80 MGD of water before the onset of summer, as it is the only source of water to meet the demands of the bustling Dwarka city. “The 20 MGD water treatment plant at Dwarka is lying idle, because there is no water. At the time of signing the MoU it was clearly mentioned that the Munak Canal will save 80 MGD of water that is otherwise lost on account of seepage in the current carrier canal. And since Delhi is paying for the construction of water it has the right to the saving as well,” the official said. Delhi has so far paid Rs.414 crore for the construction of the Rs.520 crore project.
