The North East has a vast potential for saving a lot of energy for substituting traditional direct combustion biomass fuels including firewood and ago-residues with 'producer gas'-- that is the fuel derived by converting these fuels into a gaseous form. Sources at TERI at Guwahati informed that this conversion can result in conserving energy upwards of 50 to 60 per cent per kilogram of normal solid fuel. It has also the advantagesof a smokeless environment, control over its degree of burning among others, sources said.
