Disappearing waterbodies

Once known as a "town of ponds", Raipur may soon see them disappear if steps are not taken to save these waterbodies. While the government talks of water harvesting and is paying people to dig ponds across Chhatisgarh, not much attention is being given to the already existing ponds, particularly in the state capital. The city once had over 130 ponds, half of which have either disappeared or have been filled for various purposes. Most of those that remain have been reduced in size.
