Dutch to halt gas exploration

The Dutch government bowed to objections from politicians and pressure groups and backed down from allowing gas exploration in an environmentally sensitive coastal region. Three ministers told parliament that uncertainities over the environmental impact of drilling in Waddenzee, an area of wetlands in the north of the country, meant they could not permit gas exploration by NAM, a joint venture between Royal Dutch/Shell and Esso.
