Tuticorin: District Forest Office of Tuticorin has planned to develop the Vallanad Blackbuck Sanctuary for promoting eco-tourism in association with district administration.
Blackbuck is the main species at Vallanad Reserve Forest. Though nature trail was in place, additional trekking routes had to be formed. The number of watch towers would be increased. Binoculars would be made available to the visitors. Anti-poaching watchers were appointed to thwart any attempt to kill animals. Fencing around the sanctuary would be strengthened.
An eco-awareness camp would be launched at Vallanad of Srivaikuntam taluk this month to sensitise the villagers to conservation of wildlife, Nihar Ranjan, District Forest Officer, Tuticorin, said.
A team of scientists and student volunteers would participate in the campaign. Plans were afoot to increase the forest cover.
Mr. Ranjan said that casuarina saplings would be planted along the Tuticorin shore. Saplings of teak, acacia, babul, neem and prosopis would be planted on private lands. Saplings of Ailanthus Excelsa would also be planted.
Under Collector's fund for City Beautification Scheme, more than 1,000 seedlings of fruit-bearing, flowering and shade species were planted.
