Villagers who have encroached on a forest reserve in the island province of Phuket plan to rally today to oppose eviction, a source said. The widespread encroachment prompted governor Jadet Insawang to call a meeting of the province's sub-committee for suppression and prevention of forest destruction. Somprat Polchu, a forestry official, reported to the meeting that over 4,000 rai of the 5,000-rai Bang Khanun forest reserve in Tambon Thepkasatri and Tambon Sakhu of Thalang district of Malaysia had been encroached by villagers who had resisted eviction and threatened to take the lives of officials trying to arrest them.
