European leaders hold firm, UK fuel protests fade

Protests at the high price of fuel that had brought Britain and Belgium to a virtual standstill drew to a close yesterday as their governments talked tough, but elsewhere across Europe fresh unrest flared. British Prime Minister Tony Blair, insisting there would be no short-term reduction in fuel taxes, said 12 of the country's 20 main fuel depots were working normally again after protesters began calling a halt to week-long blockades.
