At present geophysicists do not have much knowledge about the physical properties of rocks and fluids in the fault (earthquake) zones and how they affect the build-up stress for extended periods. This is because they do not have data from the field region. The deep bore hole will allow direct characterisation of the underground fault geometry, physical properties of rocks, hydraulics, fluid composition and heat flow, and also throw light on the upper crustal rocks and Deccan Volcanic Province. According to the NGRI-CSIR director, Dr Y.J. Bhaskar Rao, the experiment is expected to significantly extend the understanding of the origin of earthquakes in the region.
