A recent study by two demographers at the Centre for Development Studies and the Kerala University has questioned the long held claim over the low infant mortality rate in Kerala. The study by Dr. S Irudaya Rajant (CDS) and Dr P. Mohanachandran (KU) said that the infant mortality rate in the state was as high as 37 per 1,000 as against the claim of 14 by the Government and other agencies.
