For letting out the effluents into the patta lands
Members of Athoor Pattadhar Sangam, a farmers' association in Athoor block demanded action against textile processing units functioning near the bank of Kudaganar River and Athoor Kamarajar dam, and letting out effluents into the patta lands. In a petition submitted to the Athoor Tahsildar here on Tuesday, they also insisted that the district administration must initiate action against these units and seize machineries.
In the meanwhile, a group of farmers took revenue officials to the units at Akkaraipatti and on Mattupadhai leading to Athoor Kamarajar dam and showed them the activities. Establishment of processing and dyeing units in the Athoor region was on the increase in the wake of closure of processing units in Tiruppur. They preferred Athoor as it has abundant water source, said K. Ashwin Prabhakar, secretary of the ‘sangam.' One unit was functioning under a thatched shelter in a patta land owned by Chinnadurai for a lease amount of Rs.1,000 a day and another one under a well-established shed in a leased land on Mattupadhai. The local farmer had leased the land from a widow land owner for setting up a dairy farm. Later, he leased the same land to a dyer in Tiruppur, he alleged. “They use generators for power supply and work between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. and no activities take place during the day time.”
Dyers erected machines and generators to dye and process clothes and vacated the place after some period, said other members. They also lifted large quantity of water from the river using diesel motors, they alleged.
