VIRUDHUNAGAR: A section of owners of farm lands have opposed to a move to acquire their land to set up a SIPCOT complex near here.
In a memorandum given to the Deputy Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, one of the farmers, K. Gopalsamy of Erichanatham said that his family has held 1.52.0 hectares of farm land for the past 50 years. They have been cultivating cotton, maize and pulses.
The family came to know that a SIPCOT complex has been proposed on around 40 acres of land, including their land.
The land was the only property to the family on which they depended for their living. At a time when the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, was distributing 2-acres of land to poor farmers to uplift them, the move to acquire farm lands from small farmers for setting up industrial complex was unjustified.
Stating that there were large stretches of uncultivable land in the district, he wondered why the land that was being cultivated every year was chosen. The Government should reconsider its move and avoid acquiring cultivable land.
