Asahi Medical Co. and the University of Tokyo's Institute of Medical Science have developed a filter system for the fast recovery of hematopoietic stem cells from umbilical cord blood. Hematopoietic stem cells have a variety of therapeutic applications, including treatment of aplastic anemia and leukemia, because when injected into a person they have the ability of differentiate into all different types of blood cells.
