Guwahati: A wave of flood, triggered by incessant rains along the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Assam districts, has killed two persons and inundated hundreds of hectares of crop land rendering over two lakh people homeless so far in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts where rivers, on spate, have overtopped embankments in many places disrupting surface communication.
Sources in Dhemaji said one Kamakhya Hazarika and a five-month-old baby were drown in swelling Kumotia river when a group of people were crossing the river in a country boat.
About 1.50 lakh people from 222 villages have been rendered homeless by the wave of flood in Dhemaji district, which has been cut off from the rest of the State as flood waters of Jiadhal and Kumatia rivers breached the National Highway 52 at three different places.
Affected people have taken refuge on highways and embankments even as the district administration has arranged for distribution of relief materials.
The only railway link to the district from Guwahati too has been rendered out of order after the railway track had been washed away by flood waters at Kekuri and Norabeel on Wednesday night. This has resulted in disruption of communication to Arunachal Pradesh through the only railway link to the hill State.
All the rivers are in spate in Lakhimpur district where Singra and Ranganadi rivers have breached embankments at two places. A source in the water resource department informed that the rivers in both the districts are flowing above the danger mark.
The main channel, Brahmaputra River is flowing above the red mark at Dibrugarh and Neamati Ghat in Jorhat district.
Also, rain fed rivers flowing down from Bhutan Himalayas have inundated vast tracts of land in Baksa and Chirang districts of Lower Assam areas.
where the situation may turn for the worse in next 48 hours if the rains continue, according to official sources here. (EoM)
