Flood scene grim; CM rues lack of Central aid

Guwahati: Flood situation in Assam has remained grim with about 7 lakh people from 19 districts have been affected so far. The flood so far claimed 12 lives in the state besides causing extensive damage to standing paddy over 56 thousands hectares of land.Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday made an aerial survey of flood affected western Assam districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Goalpara and Dhubri.
He was accompanied by chief secretary, VK Pipersenia and other senior officials which included Commissioner and Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management and CEO, Assam State Disaster Management Authority, P K Tiwari.Landing at Narengi Army helipad after almost two hours of aerial survey. Gogoi praised the NDRF and the SDRF for their all out efforts in rescuing marooned people. Gogoi said the Central Government was yet to release a sizeable chunk of funds sought by Assam Government for infrastructure damages caused by floods last year. The Centre has only released Rs 380 crore so far.
Gogoi said there was no funds constraints in providing relief to the affected.
A report from Assam State Disaster Management Authority said over 6.55 lakh persons are affected in 1,417 villages across Dhemaji, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Bongaigaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Barpeta, Jorhat, Goalpara, Morigaon, Dhubri, Kamrup, Golaghat and Darrang districts.
Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has suspended all ferry and boat services in Guwahati due to rising water level of Brahmaputra.Authorities have opened 270 relief camps in Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dibrugarh, Goalpara and Dhubri, where more than 1.8 lakh persons are sheltered.
Besides, Burhidehing at Khowang in Dibrugarh, Jia Bharali at NT Road crossing in Sonitpur, Puthimari at NH Road crossing in Kamrup, Beki at Road Bridge in Barpeta, Sankosh at Golokganj in Dhubri, Katakhal at Matizuri in Hailakandi and Kushiyara at Karimganj town are also flowing above the danger marks.
The flood waters have damaged at least 54 roads in Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Golaghat, Dibrugarh and Bongaigaon, while five bridges were damaged in Barpeta and Dibrugarh.
