For villagers, water is so near, so far

The socio-economcic divide that cleaves the hamlet of Sundarkhed in Maharashtra, runs straight down a thin pipeline. On one side are the villagers and on the other, Sundarkhed's new settlers, who are getting water from the pipeline that was originally meant for the local inhabitants. The disparity stares the deprived half in the face. The upper middle class families have been given legitimate water connections by the gram panchayat. All that the villagers-mainly farm labourers can do is stare wistfully as water flows steadily down to the other side, so near and yet beyond their reach.
