Forest dept to plant over 3 crore saplings

Lucknow: The forest department has come up with plantation targets for the year 2010-11. The department will plant saplings covering over an area of 55,000 hectares in the coming year. The plantation exercise will begin this month with the advent of monsoon. The total plantation target of planting saplings over an area of 55,000 hectares is a combined target which will be shared among different departments. The forest department has assigned targets to each of the individual government departments. In the entire target year, more than 3 crore 57 lakh saplings will be planted. The varieties will differ from region to region, depending upon soil and climatic conditions.
The sizeable chunk of the plantation target will have to be met by the forest department which will plant on 40,300 hectares out of the total 55,000 hectare area. The department will be planting more than 2 crore (2,61,95,000) saplings in 2010-11. Besides, rural development department will plant saplings in an area of over 10,000 hectare. It will plant 65 lakhs saplings in the entire year.
The other departments which have been assigned targets are housing and urban development (1,100 hectare, 7,15,000 saplings), industrial development and irrigation (1,000 hectare each, 6,50,000 saplings each), PWD (750 hectares, 4,87,000 saplings), energy (250 hectares, 1,62,000 saplings). The cooperative department and land and water development have also been assigned targets. The department has also set plantation targets for Bundelkhand and Vindhyan regions. The plantation targets for eleven districts - Jhansi, Banda, Jalaun, Lalitpur, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Chitrakoot, Allahabad, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra and Mirzapur have been set for the year 2010-11. The regions will be made greener by planting 2 crore 75 lakh saplings. The area fixed for plantation is 3,200 hectare and 1,100 saplings are to be planted per hectare. The forest department will plant 2 crore 42 lakh saplings and rural development another 33 lakh. This year the target for the region has been reduced from the last year
