An ailing tiger found by passerby under a tree at Kurumbar Pallam near Bokkapuram adjoining the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) was provided medical help at forest veterinary centre on Friday. Though the area is part of the tiger habitat, spotting the animal early in the morning was unusual. As word spread, scores of villagers made a beeline for the spot. On being informed, the District Forest Officer, the Nilgiris North S. Ramasubramaniam rushed to the place along with wildlife veterinarians N.S. Manoharan and Kalaivanan and A.C. Soundarrajan of the Nilgiris Wildlife and Environment Association (NWLEA). After a quick assessment of the situation, they captured the carnivore with the help of a net and whisked it away in a pick up van to a forest veterinary centre at Theppakkadu inside the MTR. Since the tiger was very weak, it was not sedated and the whole operation was over quickly. Mr. Ramasubramaniam told The Hindu that the male tiger, aged about 13 years, was found in a wooded private property about half a kilometre from the Bokkapuram Reserved Forest. Both its hind legs were more or less paralysed and it had suffered an injury on its right hind leg. He said that its condition would be monitored round-the-clock and appropriate action taken in consultation with senior officers of the department. Its condition will be monitored round-the-clock
