PATNA While the flood situation in north Bihar eased with water levels in some rivers falling down the danger marks, there were fresh worries on Wednesday from continuous erosions of embankments at several places and a new breach seen in the Bagmati's embankment.
Officials said the flood situation for the near future could not be predicted with any certainty as there was a rise in the water levels of the Bagmati and the Lakhandei after a brief fall on Tuesday.
"We are monitoring the scene and stepping up relief measures in areas already affected by the floods," said a senior water resource department official.
Efforts to plug the original breach the Bagmati's embankment at TilakTajpur village in Stamarhi were thwarted due to the unexpected rise in water levels while a new 20-feet breach in the river's embankment at another place caused fresh concerns.
The breach at Tilak-Tajpur was plugged late on Tuesday night.
Rivers like the Gandak, Bagmati and Lakhandei still remain swollen and have been eroding their embankments faster than ever at many places over the past week, said officials.
This has posed threats to the safety of scores of thickly populated villages along the banks of these rivers. The Gandak has eaten away a 1,000-metre stretch of its bank and bed bars in Shashtrinagar locality of Muzaffarpur in the past two days and further damages are feared. There were reports that the Lakhandei's waters have intensified the erosion of the embankments at Aurai and remain a serious threat to over 100 villages.
Meanwhile, the team of bureaucrats probing the reasons of the Bagmati's breach on August 1 got into faster action on Wednesday.
The team summoned several officials from the water resources and other departments and some journalists and local representatives to record their statements about the possible causes of the breach.
