Fresh flood submerges 50 villages

Fresh flood submerged over 50 villages affecting 70,000 people over 75 hectares of agricultural land and adjacent to the river side and a CRPF camp had to be shifted to Goromur Bongkhi Gopal Natya Mandir, near Goromur satra from the river island district since past 24 hours following rise of water level in the mighty river Brahmaputra which is flowing above the danger level to 74 cm recording 87.72 cm which is on the rising trend, said Central water Commission (CWC) sources here on Sunday. According to CWC sources, due to incessant rain fort past three days all the tributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra led to rising trend and is suspected to continue for next 24 hours. In lower Majuli, fresh flood continues to submerge over 50 villages including agricultural land over hundreds of families from lower Majuli and northern Majuli area along with animals had to be shifted from shore and chapori areas, said Ajit Kumar Sharma, Circle Officer, Majuli. He said that so far no relief camp has been opened but process has been on, though schools declared summer vacation, flood victims are likely to be accommodated there and presently people are erecting temporary sheds along the embankment and PWD roads and more new places under Majuli revenue circle has been submerged in the low lying areas specially. Brahmaputra tributaries like Ronganadi, Subansiri is flowing with high currents since Saturday night as the water current is washing off the fresh areas and affecting vast low lying lands that led to a chaotic situation in the lower portion of the island district. Meanwhile food items like rice, dal, salt, kerosene, medicines, mosquito nets have been arranged for the victims. SDRF team is also preparing itself for situations like washing off embankment and for shifting of people from low lying areas and along with cattle and goats. Night patrolling along the embankment and VDPs are imposed since this evening to keep away from any untoward incident so that people could be shifted without any loss of life and property, informed administrative sources here today.
