The National Institute for Fusion Science in Japan said it expects within the year to raise the temperature of the plasma in the Large Helical Device to 50 million C. The device is the largest helical-type experimental device for research into fusion energy. For fusion energy to become a reality, the fuel must be maintained in a plasma state at more than 100 million C.
