The Galileo space probe, in a do-or-die effort, came within 612 km of Jupiter's volcanic moon on Sunday in a splendid finale to its four-years mission. The intense radiation emanating from the moon risked crippling the spacecraft's computers and guidance systems, but an hour after the craft had its closest encounter with it at 10.06 pm, Erickson said all systems were functioning normally.
