CHENNAI: Visitors to Kilburn Nagar and its neighbouring colonies are often appalled by the thick clouds of acrid smoke enveloping the area. But for residents enduring the garbage dump it has been a daily ordeal for nearly a decade. Two years have gone by since the Madras High Court restrained the municipality from dumping garbage, biomedical and industrial waste at the dumping yard in Kilburn Nagar. In its order passed in November 2006, the court had also directed the Local Administration Secretary to quicken the process of allocating an alternative site for the Madhavaram municipality to set up a compost yard. But, residents of Kilburn Nagar said they continue to suffer as the directives laid down by the court have not been adhered to. Besides Kilburn Nagar, residents of areas such as Omakulamedu and Thirumurugan Nagar in the neighbouring areas cannot escape the smoke billowing from the burnt garbage and the stench. Respiratory problems People living near the dumping yard said the problem is so intense that their houses often get engulfed in smoke emanating from the dumping yard.
