Miniature gas-fuelled power stations producing heat and electricity could start replacing household boilers within a few years, with wide ranging implications for mature energy markets. Some innovators are adapting conventional combined heat and power technology (CHP) that recycles a generator's waste heat. Others are miniaturising fuel cell CHP systems that produce heat and power by chemical reaction instead of combustion.
