Measurements by one of the world's largest radio telescopes have detected peculiar bulges in the atmosphere of a giant star, which may be caused by huge plumes of gas thrust from beneath the star's surface. The star is Betelgeuse, a huge reddish star in the shoulder of the constellation Orion the Hunter.
