The Balika Samriddhi Yojna (girld child scheme), launched in 1997 to elevate the status of the girl child born to a family living below the poverty line, has failed to make a headway due to severe financial crunch. The funds required to implement the scheme effectively was estimated at Rs 250 crore but the money sanctioned for the project was only Rs 60 crore for the year 1998-99.
