The announcement last week that bacteria of a strain associated with chest infections could be found in the brains of Alzheimer's disease raised pulse rates in the world of medical research. If the bug in question Chalmydia pneumoniae, which is spread by coughs and sneezes, plays a significant part in causing the disease, then treatment with antibiotics could help to prevent the commonest cause of dementia in the developed world.
