Britain plans to reduce nuclear discharges into the sea by a further 85 per cent by 2020 in order to meet European commitments. The proposals, announced by Michael Meacher, environment minister, are unlikely to please Denmark and Ireland which are pressing Britain to curb all discharges and close the Thorp nuclear reprocessing plant close to the coast at Sellafield, north-west England.
