The Government of India has accepted almost all the major recommendations of the Shrivastav committee report on Revitalisation of North Eastern Council, which had been accorded the status of a statutory regional planning body for the northeastern frontier region, and initiated steps to implement them in a phased and systematic order. The first set of decisions involving administrative, organisational and functional restructuring of the council was taken last month, in which, it was decided that the DoNER minister would be the chairman of the NEC. Until recently, the NEC played a mere advisory role, and one of the Governors of the northeastern states presided over the affairs of the council as chairman on a rotational basis.
