Government and COGEMA fail to reduce sea bed radioactive contamination off La Hague reprocessing plant

Dangerously high levels of radioactive contamination have again been found, by Greenpeace, on the sea bed off France's giant La Hague nuclear reprocessing complex, highlighting the continued failure of the French Government and its regulatory agencies to protect the marine environment and public health. Sediment collected by divers operating from the Greenpeace vessel Strakur and analysed by the independent French radiological laboratory ACRO, contain alarming levels of radioactive elements, including : caesium-137;cobalt-60; americium-241; and ruthenium-106. This sediment exceeds European Community levels for controlled nuclear waste.
