The Ministry of Environment will soon conduct a survey on radioactive contents of ground water in Taejon and Chungchong provinces in response to a recent revelation by an environmental group that ground water in the area contains excessive levels of uranium and radon. The ministry will test the ground water and bottled water produced by 60 firms that draw water from the underground in the area. It will also conduct a health survey of 1,000 residents in the region to see if they have been adversely affected by any radiation. Of the residents, 300 will have their livers and kidneys tested, the official said. High levels of uranium and radon have been known to cause cancer and other fatal diseases in humans.
