One of the resolutions the Coimbatore Corporation Council passed at the Monday’s meeting urged the State Government to sanction a mono rail project for the city.
The Mayor proposed the resolution and the Council unanimously accepted it. The Council resolution comes after various associations urged the civic body to take up the issue as the city badly deserved one. More than a fortnight ago, the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore urged the Corporation to take up the proposal, saying that cities with far lesser population, area and financial wherewithal had made considerable progress in getting sanction for a mass transport project and a few even commencing preliminary work.
The Coimbatore Corporation first took up the issue of mass transit system for the city during 1996-2001 and proposed a mass rapid transit system, as in Chennai.
But it had to soon give up the move after experts said it was not feasible because of the poor returns on such a capital-intensive project.
The second of the Corporation’s proposal was a metro rail, as in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
The civic body had to drop this proposal as well because Coimbatore was a radial and not linear city.
It also mooted the bus rapid transit system but nothing much came of it.
With the latest move, the Corporation has reignited the debate on the urgent need for a mass transit system for the city of over 16 lakh population.
