The government of India is contemplating a sui generis legislation for according privileges and rights to plant breeders who evolve new varieties of crops to be covered under the legislation, while simultaneously safeguarding the interests of farmers as consumers or the rural communities or individual farmers who have conserved traditional varieties over the ages.
