The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to file the list of both legal and illegal borewells in areas marked as having contaminated groundwater. A Bench headed by judicial member Jawad Rahim asked the DJB to submit the list of borewells to the Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Revenue. The directions came after the counsel appearing for the State government informed the green court that despite previous orders the DJB had not sent the list to the Commissioners of the civic bodies. However, during the hearing, the counsel appearing for the DJB maintained that a list of 4,872 borewells had been submitted. The NGT further directed the Deputy Commissioners to comply with the orders. The tribunal had on January 31 directed that illegal borewells, tubewells and wells be identified and sealed within two weeks. “The DJB is directed to carry out a survey of north-west district of Delhi and prepare a list of both illegal and legal borewells in that area with their locations. No new licence for abstraction of water from borewells in said areas will be granted unless water samples are collected and analysed,” the Bench had said.
