The international environment group 'Greenpeace' has said that shipbreaking yard owners of Mumbai and Alang in Gujarat should protect workers from hazardous wastes that come out while scrapping. A fact-finding team, headed by chief co-ordinator of Greenpeace in India, Nityanand Jayaraman, told a press conference during the weekend in Mumbai that about 40,000 workers in Alang were exposed to various hazardous wastes including asbestos, tributyl and polycyclic aromatic compounds and dioxins in their working and leisure environment.
