The West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's thrust on economic reforms in the State appears to be facing increasing resistance from the traditional advocates of the status quo ante in Bengal's society. A measure of the growing resistance is available in the way three formidable lobbies have either gone or are going for an open showdown with the Government demanding a rollback of hikes Mr. Bhattacharjee's "New Left" has proposed in court and medical education fee as well as plans for regulating several minority schools.
