The Government has come out with a set of guidelines on the price structure for blood units issued by blood banks, with a view to prevent them from exploiting the gap between the supply and demand for blood and over-charing the patients.A highlight of the guidelines is that instead of prescribing a uniform rate, they provide for different charges for different scenarios, ranging from blood issued to patients suffering from thalassemia and haemophillia to the blood supplied by blood banks in the commercial and corporate sectors, which tests the blood for diseases over and above that is mandatory require.
